Beyond the big national memberships sits a long tail of smaller ones: your credit union, your employer’s perks portal, a professional association, your university alumni office. Each may offer cruises. Here is how a credit union travel club and its cousins usually work, and what to check before you book.

Credit Union Travel Clubs

A credit union travel club is a booking service offered to members, often powered by an outside travel company and branded with the credit union’s name. Cruises sit alongside hotels, flights and rental cars. The member extra varies: rewards points, a statement credit, cash back to your account or simply access to a booking site. Because each credit union chooses its own partner, two neighboring credit unions can offer very different programs.

Find it

Look under member benefits, perks or travel on your credit union’s website, or ask at a branch.

Some clubs pay their extra only when you pay with the credit union’s own card.

Insurance is separate

Credit unions also sell travel insurance; Cruise & Travel Insurance explains what to look for in cruise cover.

Employer Perk Portals and Professional Associations

Many employers give staff access to a discount portal run by an outside perks company, and travel is usually one category. Professional associations and unions do the same. These portals tend to show the same public cruise fares with a modest extra, which is fine — just compare totals and confirm who services the booking.

Teachers, healthcare workers and first responders should also check the dedicated rates some lines publish; Cruise Discounters explains those.

Alumni Association Cruises

Alumni travel is a different kind of member cruise. Instead of a discount, you get a hosted departure: faculty lecturers aboard, a small group of fellow graduates, and sometimes an entire chartered ship. Yale’s Alumni Academy, for example, has announced a privately chartered Mediterranean voyage aboard Sea Cloud II for the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027. Programs like this book up early and tend to run on smaller ships.

Alumni cruises trade a discount for a host: lectures, reunions and a ship full of fellow graduates.

Our sister site College Alumni Cruises covers organizing an alumni group cruise from the association’s side. If you would rather sail with a social cruise club than a formal membership, see Cruise Club.

Credit Unions, Employers and Alumni: FAQ

What is a credit union travel club?

It is a travel booking service a credit union offers its members, usually run by an outside travel company under the credit union’s name. Some add rewards points, cash back or a members-only rate; the details are set by each credit union and its partner.

Are employer travel discounts worth using for a cruise?

Sometimes. Workplace perk portals often resell the same public fares with a small extra. Compare the total with the same cabin elsewhere and check who you contact for changes.

Can anyone join an alumni association cruise?

Many alumni travel programs welcome friends and family of graduates, though members usually get first access. The program will say who is eligible.
